People must understand that the world does not revolve around themselves. They must place themselves within a giant puzzle, in which they are one little puzzle piece of the world that must understand life. Life is complicated, and people have different agendas that others must know to fit with others.

This is the most likely the reason why Mrs. Winterbottom left. She has her own agenda, and she has a reason for leaving her family. She did not leave in vain, that she hated the family, but that she, like others, need time to themselves. Even so, this allows her family to realize how important she is to her family, so that they plead for forgiveness if Phoebe's mother was mad at them.

Life is so interwoven by the lives of others that people bond together to to help each other in different ways. So, by more interaction between human beings, the more complicated life can become, criss-crossing paths.
