1st Hour
Woosh! A hover car sped past. Evan shook his head in disbelief. The world was going to become like the dark ages again if people weren’t careful with their hover cars. Evan continued on his way while watching people try to make it to their jobs on time. After the decree number 8 of the Highest Power you had to be to work on time or else you would lose your job. Evan worked the night shift at the capital so he wasn’t due to work until 7:00 p.m. sharp.
Brrrrrrrrrrring! The work bell rang and everything went silent. He loved this time of day, everything was so peaceful. Just like it used to be before the technology boom in 2304. Now that is was 2313 things were even better but people were abusing the power of technology.
He was trying to decide what to do until 7:00 but finally decided on heading to Antarctica. He might as well go now because it would be gone in a near 10 years because of global warming. He wished he could see the polar bears that his great-great-great-great-great-great grandpa had once seen. Now there were only stories about them and when they had become extinct long, long ago. So off he zoomed for about 20 minutes until he reached his destination, the small ice island. Normally populated with visitors it was unexpectedly quiet but then of course most people were at work. Walking around the small peaceful place was and always had been one of Evan’s favorite things to do.
Beep! Went his watch. Time to leave he thought to himself as he walked back to his hover car. He popped the door open and hopped inside, told the robot machine to go to the capital and off he was. The computer did all the rest of the work.
Brrrrring! Went another bell signaling the end of the afternoon shift and the beginning of the night shift. Evan walked inside and swiped his ID in the robot. The robot stalled for a minute and then said, “Welcome Evan McDouglas, you are credited with an on time entry to work. Please Proceed.
Evan had a simple job. He had to watch the skies at night through a high-powered telescope to see if anything coming towards the earth. As long as he had this job nothing had happened but that didn’t discourage Evan. So down he sat ready to face another long night of nothing but black skies and stars.
Later that evening around 12:30 he saw a strange blip on one of his radar screens. Hmmmm…he thought and decided to zoom in on it. Focusing his telescope he saw that it wasn’t just any blip, it was a space ship! He pressed the yellow alert button because he wasn’t quite sure if it was red alert button worthy…yet.
“What!?!?” one of the patrol officers said out of breath as he barged into the room. “What is the yellow alert!?!”
“Look for yourself” Evan said as he gestured to the radar screen and then to the telescope.
“Oh my gosh!” the officer said and then immediately pushed the big red button.
“WEEEEEEEEEEP! WEEEEEEEEEP! WEEEEEEEEP! The siren rang out. The Highest Power himself ran into the room. “What!?!” he gasped, “What is it?”
“Martians. Coming. To the. EARTH!” the officer said not even believing his own words. And they were, heading straight for them all.
“There is only one thing to do” the Highest Power declared. Everyone looked at him with quizzical looks.
“You don’t mean…” one of the bodyguards stuttered behind him.
“Yes, I do.” He stated as he pulled out another big red button out of his pocket and pushed it with a shaky finger.
That button was the key to their problems. It activated a force field around the whole entire earth. The only problem was that it had never been tested before…
